Simplify and Scale FEA Post-Processing - Read, Manipulate, Create, and Visualize Custom Simulation Results with Altair Compose®

An engineer working for Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation Marine Systems (NGSC-MS) was given a project to improve their teams’ current NASTRAN results post-processing workflow by writing a script to automate the task. They reached out to Altair for collaboration and Altair engineers were able to quickly determine that Altair’s mathematical modeling environment – “Altair Compose” – would be the ideal solution due to its ability to read, manipulate, and write NASTRAN results. Also, the Open Matrix Language is a scripting language that is familiar to the engineering community. Given sample NASTRAN results and requirements Altair engineers provided a “template” script. The NGSC-MS team was able to quickly understand and modify the script to their goals. The custom results were then viewable in HyperView as a contour plot, which saved a considerable amount of time during post-processing and documentation workflows.

Outsmarting Heavy Equipment Design

Heavy mobile machines consist mostly of production equipment working almost twenty hours a day, year on year, in diverse harsh environments, undergoing extreme loads and overloads. Especially diggers and loaders such as hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, and backhoes, cater to multiple applications with use cases such as digging, trenching, loading, lifting, breaking, and ripping. Many times, these machines undergo non-standard uses where the machine is subjected to unplanned forces and moments as in the case of self-loading on a trailer, or a bucket hitting a dump truck body. This paper highlights the workflow process and simulation-driven methods to integrate multi-physics with Altair’s industry-leading solutions. The latest generation of Altair simulation tools can capture a wider range of vehicle systems and environmental interactions.

Efficient Engineering Based Modeling of Layered Composite Structures

This presentation is by Program Manager Rob Jopson. It’s a given that the simulation models we build are intended to capture and predict physical behavior, the data used to create them is not always representative of the manufacturing process used to build the physical part. For layered composite parts in particular, this mismatch can cause significant overhead in managing the simulation data as the model is created and evolves. To solve this problem, Altair’s ply-based modeling methodology strives to maintain a 1:1 relationship between the simulation data and the manufacturing process, independent of solver. The latest developments of this methodology will be presented as a workflow in the new Composite Browser, available in HyperWorks. The recording is about 18 minutes long and was originally presented at the 2020 ATCx Composites.

Composites at Altair

This presentation is by Markku Palanterä, Director Composites Business Development, Altair The composites design and simulation suite by Altair is actively developed with a holistic view to cover all stages of the process from material modeling all the way to the certification of composite structures. On the material modeling side, the focus is on continuous further development of Altair’s multiscale modeling technology for continuous fiber composites and injection molded plastics, but not forgetting further application areas, such as additive manufacturing. The ply-based composite modeling in Altair HyperWorks has recently undergone a major update to achieve an improved, more efficient modeling workflow. This together with planned further developments tie the modeling even better with the manufacturing to create realistic models of composite components as built. Altair’s solver technology for implicit and explicit analyses can utilize multiscale material models to accurately describe composite material nonlinear behavior up to failure. Altair’s unique composites optimization technology is being enhanced with the repeat laminate concept that provides added efficiency and user control over lay-up design. To further complement the idea of an integrated system with all the necessary composites capabilities, the Composite Stress Toolbox has been introduced in HyperWorks to support design and certification. The recording is about 22 minutes long and was originally presented at the 2020 ATCx Composites.

Curing, Cracking and Distortions in Epoxy Composites. Simulating Manufacturing Processes using Finite Element Approach

This presentation is by Dr. Tomasz Garstka and Graham Barnes, LMAT Ltd. Manufacturing induced deformations and residual stresses are an unavoidable consequence of processing composites at elevated temperatures. A number of mechanisms have been identified causing residual stresses and distortions, including mismatch in the thermal expansion, cure shrinkage of the resin, consolidation and tool-part interaction. These mechanisms usually act collectively through the curing process and may lead to severe changes in the laminate characteristic. When cured and exposed to natural environment moisture swelling, as well as subsequent stress relaxation mechanisms lead to further geometrical changes. A novel cure simulation solver is demonstrated here with the application to typical aircraft components. The recording is about 10 minutes long and was originally presented at the 2020 ATCx Composites.

Altair HyperView™ – Design Sensitivity Analysis Utility

Design Sensitivity Analysis Utility • Design sensitivity represents a change in response with respect to a change in a design variable, which is typically used for optimization. • Design sensitivity can also be used as a diagnostic tool to understand what components in the system (through associated properties referenced by design variables) have controlling influence on the response in question. • Traditionally, design sensitivity can be cumbersome to request for frequency response analysis. It can only be requested as a part of an optimization run, where multiple design responses have to be created for each frequency response at each analysis frequency; objective function and constraints have to be defined and set in specific ways to force sensitivity output at all analysis frequencies for all design variables. • In HyperGraph 2D, the Design Sensitivity Analysis utility allows you to plot and rank design sensitivity curves from an OptiStruct dsa.0.h3d file.

Tips & Tricks

Altair HyperView™ – OrderCut Analysis Utility

OrderCut Analysis Utility • OrderCut Analysis utility generates and post-processes engine order related data from an OptiStruct or Nastran frequency response analysis that contains either RPM-based loading subcases or order-based loading subcases. • Background, engine related noise, and vibration problems are typically linked to engine orders that are harmonic multiples of the engine’s fundamental firing frequency. • Understanding the order content of the problem signal is a way to identify the physical phenomenon that is causing the problem. • To solve the problem, you can adjust the design parameters to modify the engine operation, which in turn reduces the problem orders.

Tips & Tricks

Altair HyperView™ – Multiple Sample Analysis Utility

Multiple Sample Analysis Utility • This utility allows to post-process results from a Multiple Sample Analysis (MSA), including plotting a spread of responses (+/-95% and mean). • You can choose Structures or Loads MSA processes: o Structures MSA processes results from a randomization of modal and connection parameters. o Loads MSA processes results from a randomization of wheel imbalance forces. • Sensitive parameters filtering is also supported for both Structures MSA and Loads MSA.
